Actually, I just posted a few photos of the twin baby quilts that I finished and that's what prompted her question. Let's see if you have the same reaction:
The first picture is of them unwashed. They were quite stiff and unruly with all that dense quilting (which, incidentally took me 8 hours.....ugh! I was so bored after the first one, I thought I'd flip to repeat the process on the second, but I did it!) Then they had to be washed to be snuggly and soft, so the last pic is of them washed and nice.
BUT......this was not my friend's issue. She asked if I was nuts because these are for the friend of my daughters who already has 3 boys and is pregnant with the twins, remember? WHITE, she asked??? White????????? I admit, I thought about it, but I did..........(hanging head in shame here.......but it was necessary due to the color and situation).......machine sewed the binding on them. I KNOW they will probably be washed to death!! I do so want these upcoming babies to be girls! You have no idea! AND, if they are girls, they deserve something pretty and nice................actually, the mom deserves to have her kids (no matter what sex) have something pretty and nice, don't you think? After all, how much stuff can look good after already having 3 boys? SO......that's why I'm nuts! 'Cause the quilts are white! (At least that's why I'm nuts this time! lol) What do you think?
I think they are wonderful - heirloom pieces. And no, you are not crazy - or maybe some of us join you in the dementia phase - I like lots of white in a baby quilt.

These are wonderful and I am in love with them! Give her some of that oxyclean (whatever the name is) to go with them. New mom's and babies should have some beautiful things and if they get stained you can make her some more.
ReplyDeleteOh of course you are nuts, its only nutty folk that have the creativeness to make something as wonderful as these two quilts. Your friend certainly deserves some beautiful things for her expected babies, and you deserve a medal.. and lots of hugs for making them.

ReplyDeleteThey are absolutely gorgeous. Well done for surviving the quilting - I am pretty sure I couldn't have gone the distance on it. I HATE doing straight line quilting although I completely love how they look.

ReplyDeleteWhich colour should they have? Brown, orange or pale-red? No way!!!!! All colours would bleach,but white will be not!!!!!! Perfectly done!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy mother-in-law gave me a quilt similar to the Chinese Coins pattern, with white sashings, bindings and backing over 30 years ago - I thought she was crazy as well at the time, but that quilt has been used to death, even as a picnic quilt and now resides at my daughter's home, still in good use. I don't think you are crazy at all!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE these and can tell you that if they aren't liked I would be thrilled to take them off your hands for my two Grandbabies who still need a quilt. We have a year after their born right? Oh wait! That's a wedding present for a newly married couple where you have that year to get them a wedding present. With white you can always use even BLEACH (carefully) to get spots out. Why did they make little girls' pinafore's white? So you can bleach them...
ReplyDeleteAs a mum of three small ones, I can assure you I wouldn't care at all about the white - they are stunning! Such bright, wonderful baby quilts.
ReplyDeleteThese quilts look awesome! The White-Problem is not yours when you give them away ;) I just made two place-mats and considered to laminate them with Lamifix. But then I thought, that this will ruin the linen/fabric texture. We all love nice things to have around. So we just need to take care or make new things when the old are no more nice ;)

These are so beautiful, I don't think the babies will dare make a mess of them! I'm trying to squint at them, but I can't figure out how you did it! The rainbow strips, are they pieced? Are they then appliqu'ed on?

ReplyDeleteI love these, Carol. But I don't know if I will ever have the patience that you so obviously have! BTW, I bought (yes, I know I should be ashamed to admit it) an all white quilt for my bed, quilted with one inch squares, and I have two dogs. So I think I understand where you're coming from. As you say, there's a time and place for everything, and I'm thankful for that machine binding because mine most certainly gets washed to death! :)
ReplyDeletecruising back through old posts on your blog because i saw these quilts on flickr - and love them!! i made my son a white baby quilt, and it's STILL white. well, it has a few dirt spots on it now since it needs to be washed, but all the previous dirt spots have come out, so i'm not worried. and all the spit up stains. EVERYTHING has come out! the only stuff that really, permanently stains is once they start eating solids, and they won't sit still for long on a blanket/quilt in one spot then, anyway. i use cloth diapers, and just use the same wash cycle if i'm worried a stain will be persistent: hot/cold, prewash cycle, with an extra rinse. it's worked every time for me!! sun is also a great bleacer :)has she had the babies yet? any update on the white-ness? i think they're gorgeous white!!
