I just had a friend Flickr mail me and ask me if I was nuts! (This is nothing new, really, so it really didn't freak me out too badly. I've had this happen alot!.........not the Flickr mail part, but the "nuts" part!) I mean, I do have a few years on me, so as the years progress, the pertinent question remains (and continues!!) lol
Actually, I just posted a few photos of the twin baby quilts that I finished and that's what prompted her question. Let's see if you have the same reaction:
The first picture is of them unwashed. They were quite stiff and unruly with all that dense quilting (which, incidentally took me 8 hours.....ugh! I was so bored after the first one, I thought I'd flip to repeat the process on the second, but I did it!) Then they had to be washed to be snuggly and soft, so the last pic is of them washed and nice.
BUT......this was not my friend's issue. She asked if I was nuts because these are for the friend of my daughters who already has 3 boys and is pregnant with the twins, remember? WHITE, she asked??? White????????? I admit, I thought about it, but I did..........(hanging head in shame here.......but it was necessary due to the color and situation).......machine sewed the binding on them. I KNOW they will probably be washed to death!! I do so want these upcoming babies to be girls! You have no idea! AND, if they are girls, they deserve something pretty and nice................actually, the mom deserves to have her kids (no matter what sex) have something pretty and nice, don't you think? After all, how much stuff can look good after already having 3 boys? SO......that's why I'm nuts! 'Cause the quilts are white! (At least that's why I'm nuts this time! lol) What do you think?
I think they are wonderful - heirloom pieces. And no, you are not crazy - or maybe some of us join you in the dementia phase - I like lots of white in a baby quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhat a labor of love to make two of these great quilts. My hat goes off to you! Of course, I would do the same for a dear friend too, so move over as I'm joining the group of 'nuts'. LOL
ReplyDeleteI love them!
ReplyDeleteThey are gorgeous! And i totally agree, your friend deserves pretty new quilts after having 3 boys. Besides I think all the baby quilts I've made are white too. Anyway, I love love love them!

These are wonderful and I am in love with them! Give her some of that oxyclean (whatever the name is) to go with them. New mom's and babies should have some beautiful things and if they get stained you can make her some more.
ReplyDeleteOh of course you are nuts, its only nutty folk that have the creativeness to make something as wonderful as these two quilts. Your friend certainly deserves some beautiful things for her expected babies, and you deserve a medal.. and lots of hugs for making them.
ReplyDeleteThey are absolutely beautiful and will be treasured for generations!
ReplyDeleteI think that they are beautiful and if something happens to stain them it will just be one of those baby things that happens. The quilt will be no less beautiful, just more loved.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Not nuts, creator of beauty and great baby quilts. Or maybe a little nuts with all that piecing of little blocks of colour at wonky angles......
ReplyDeleteEither way the quilts are fabulous and mom and babes are sure to love them no matter what. A quilt that never gets a mark on it has not been loved so here's to lots of marks on these beauties!
I don't think you're nuts!!
ReplyDeleteThey are absolutely gorgeous. Well done for surviving the quilting - I am pretty sure I couldn't have gone the distance on it. I HATE doing straight line quilting although I completely love how they look.
Os teus trabalhos são maravilhosos.
ReplyDeleteBeijo
just found your blog, after reading down a bit I think we are twin sisters separated at birth by an old mean midwife, grin. Barbara in western NC
ReplyDeleteI don't think white is too nuts for babies if I have white covers for dogs beds! Your quilts are so beautiful! Thank you also again for fiew earlier, happy and colourful posts! x Teje
ReplyDeleteThose quilts are DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!!!!! You must just love this lady to invest such time in such beauties to give them away to her! I'd say you're just very generous with yourself and that she's super lucky.
ReplyDeleteWhich colour should they have? Brown, orange or pale-red? No way!!!!! All colours would bleach, but white will be not!!!!!! Perfectly done!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy mother-in-law gave me a quilt similar to the Chinese Coins pattern, with white sashings, bindings and backing over 30 years ago - I thought she was crazy as well at the time, but that quilt has been used to death, even as a picnic quilt and now resides at my daughter's home, still in good use. I don't think you are crazy at all!
ReplyDeletePS: There is something to said about the poly-cotton blends of the 70's and 80's, - they certainly have stood up to the test of time!
creo que no importa el color tan solo que son preciosas y realmente no creo que estes loca sino que sabes muy bien lo que quieres, es mas me pareces un genio, saludos desde Cantabria. Gm
ReplyDeleteThey are absolutely gorgeous! I'm hoping for girls too, but they'd be perfect for any sex. Yeah, you're crazy, but that's why we like you. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love your quilts. They look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell?? Who cares if you are crazy or not - its your right to make whatever you want to and really - do you expect them to look pristine and brand new forever?? We love your craziness.
ReplyDeleteThey are gorgeous!! Love them!! Not nuts!!!
ReplyDeleteThey're adorable! I don't think you're nuts at all. It's when they get older that they start doing really awful things to the quilts.
ReplyDeletehahaha....you funny Carol! These quilts look awesome, but I still think you're nuts for making them so white! That's my story and I'm stickin to it! By the way, you know I love the quilting on them! No wonder you were so quiet and I was wondering what happened to you.
ReplyDeleteYou are so generous to gift such lovely and time consuming quilts. They are gorgeous and so modern. I am going to run out and purchase the Quilting Modern book you mentioned a few posts back because I am loving the quilts you are making, so modernly vibrant and full of awesomeness!! Lol.

I think the white quilts are so wonderful with the contrasting colors. I love them and I think the mother will adore them.
ReplyDeleteI think you are a wonderful! And not nuts at all. These quilts are fabulous and your daughter's friend will be thrilled. Lucky, lucky babies.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these and can tell you that if they aren't liked I would be thrilled to take them off your hands for my two Grandbabies who still need a quilt. We have a year after their born right? Oh wait! That's a wedding present for a newly married couple where you have that year to get them a wedding present. Well, anyway, I love those. they are wonderful. Great job!
ReplyDeleteLOVE them!!!
ReplyDeleteThe white really makes the striped strips POP!
I don't have much opinion about the practicality of white, but I do love the quilts themselves. VERY clever use of design and color.
ReplyDeleteGonna have to go onto my To-Do list!
Niiiice job!
With white you can always use even BLEACH (carefully) to get spots out. Why did they make little girls' pinafore's white? So you can bleach them...
ReplyDeleteAs a mum of three small ones, I can assure you I wouldn't care at all about the white - they are stunning! Such bright, wonderful baby quilts.
ReplyDeleteThese quilts look awesome! The White-Problem is not yours when you give them away ;) I just made two place-mats and considered to laminate them with Lamifix. But then I thought, that this will ruin the linen/fabric texture. We all love nice things to have around. So we just need to take care or make new things when the old are no more nice ;)

These are so beautiful, I don't think the babies will dare make a mess of them! I'm trying to squint at them, but I can't figure out how you did it! The rainbow strips, are they pieced? Are they then appliqu'ed on?
ReplyDeleteNothing nuts about you...these are twinaliscious...wow
ReplyDeleteYou are a little nutty, which is a glorious thing! Why be like everyone else and force these new babies into pink or blue? BORING. My aunt Minnie had 11 kids and managed to keep her wash white most of the time.
ReplyDeleteYou go girl! Beautiful work!
Fabulous quilts-and they are perfect for a boy or girl...maybe she will have one of each? How cute would that be :)
ReplyDeleteStill behind on my blog reading. I think you are fantastic and that this mom is so lucky to receive your work! I'd only think you were crazy if you made three more so that the older brothers got quilts too!
ReplyDeleteI love these, Carol. But I don't know if I will ever have the patience that you so obviously have! BTW, I bought (yes, I know I should be ashamed to admit it) an all white quilt for my bed, quilted with one inch squares, and I have two dogs. So I think I understand where you're coming from. As you say, there's a time and place for everything, and I'm thankful for that machine binding because mine most certainly gets washed to death! :)
ReplyDeletecruising back through old posts on your blog because i saw these quilts on flickr - and love them!! i made my son a white baby quilt, and it's STILL white. well, it has a few dirt spots on it now since it needs to be washed, but all the previous dirt spots have come out, so i'm not worried. and all the spit up stains. EVERYTHING has come out! the only stuff that really, permanently stains is once they start eating solids, and they won't sit still for long on a blanket/quilt in one spot then, anyway. i use cloth diapers, and just use the same wash cycle if i'm worried a stain will be persistent: hot/cold, prewash cycle, with an extra rinse. it's worked every time for me!! sun is also a great bleacer :)has she had the babies yet? any update on the white-ness? i think they're gorgeous white!!
