Summer goes too fast!!

I hate looking forward to winter!  I hate the cold, the wind, the ...........(U G H)....snow!!  This year I decided to take pictures of the area under my kitchen windows so I can dream of summer all winter long and think of what I should plant next year.  The first picture was taken 5/31/12, the day after we planted:

And the summer continued.  Now, it's 7/15/12.  This is how it looked with tons of watering since we had such a hot, dry summer:

By now (8/31/12), stuff was getting a bit out of hand.  The tomato bushes were growing all over the place, the basil was going nuts, and the rosemary was buried in there somewhere.  I was picking a bowl full of tomatoes every day!

And this is how the area looks today.  We took everything out this weekend to prepare for winter.  The birdbath is in the basement, the pots are packed away until next year, the only things left out are the wind chimes, which I dearly love and don't take down until the very last minute!  Oh.....and I never trimmed my Rose Bush of Sharon.  I must do that yet!  I'll put that on the list for next weekend, when we have to trim down the perennials.  Ugh......then I'll have to wait a whole 8 months until we start all over again.

  1. Oy vey you have to start early, we are still picking flowers and harvesting veggies. It will be another month before I have to put my garden to bed. Your flower bed looked lovely though and hopefully the photos will get you through the long winter months!

  2. Living in the South West, we don't have to do all that much. We do get hard freezes here and I have learned to trim the plants but to leave what I call some "sacrificial limbs" to protect the trunk of the plants. Your tomatoes and basil sound wonderful! I hope you have a beautiful Autumn!

  4. Slow down a bit -- don't we still have Fall to enjoy before we have to start worrying about Winter? Please tell me we do!

  5. Isn't it sad to clean out garden beds and dump out hanging baskets at the end of the season? This job makes me so sad. It just seems mean to me to discard the lovely flowers that valiantly grew and brilliantly bloomed for me all summer. I feel for you.

  8. Tis sad that you must de-frock so soon. I bought chrysanthemums for planting last week. They are perfect for TN this time of year. My lawn guy planted them for me, so pulling into the driveway that day gave me a pleasant surprise. I had sat them where I wanted, so he didn't have to ask. Love having the yellows and purples to greet me every day.

  9. Gosh - how extreme - I think you need to move to somewhere more temperate. Its a bit of a waste isnt it to be removing such lovely plants, though obviously they are gorgeous when the weather is OK. Hard for me to imagine living in Queensland Australia where winter might mean a jumper for a couple of weeks. The weirdest thing I had seen in my life (a few years back now) was a home swimming pool in Calgary with snow around it. Hope you can last the winter..

  10. Preparing for winter??? Unheard of in most parts of Texas. I was surfing over at The Modern Quilt Guild and saw that your block was selected for the QuiltCon Block challenge. I think you mentioned this some time ago--did you? Anyhow, congratulation, So many fabulous blocks sent in by so many generous and talented quilters---your block is in good company or is it
that their blocks are in good company with yours :)
